CYCLING AMONG LOVELY MEDIEVAL WALLED TOWNS – from Marostica to Bassano del Grappa

Nestled among the wonderful hills between the Asiago plateau and the Brenta river, Marostica is considered the most beautiful medieval walled town in Veneto. For its location, it is also the ideal starting point from which to explore, by bike, some of the least touristy parts of Northern Italy. Outside the historical walls, there are many secondary roads which go through a lovely landscape of olive groves, cherry trees and vineyards.

By booking this package, you can cycle to the charming city of Bassano del Grappa and spend two nights in the only hotel inside the historical walls of Marostica. The hotel is just a few steps away from the huge chess board used for the most original chess game of all times, played with living pawns.

The schedule is as follows:

Day 1:

MAROSTICA, THE CITY OF HUMAN CHESS GAME

When you arrive in Marostica you can park your car in the hotel’s private car park and start exploring the city in complete freedom.
To take the perfect photo of the Chess Square with the walls climbing up the hill we recommend visiting the Lower Castle and walking around the chemin de ronde. Instead, if you want to enjoy the panoramic view of the medieval town, you can walk-up to the Upper Castle. Do not miss the Cherry Trail, particularly enchanting when the cherry trees are in blossom. After all that walking relax and enjoy a spritz – the local aperitif - in the Chess Square before the three course dinner at the renowned Restaurant Cuori.

Day 2:

CYCLING FROM MAROSTICA TO BASSANO DEL GRAPPA

After the rich buffet breakfast, you can cycle towards the famous Alpini Bridge, the symbol of Bassano del Grappa. The itinerary covers a distance of 22 km mostly on flatland.
Along this circular route you can admire the wonderful villa designed by Andrea Palladio for count Angarano, cycle on the banks of the Brenta river and discover the secrets of the famous ceramics of Nove, that for centuries have been the crown jewel of Venetian handicraft production.

Only a few kilometers separate Bassano from Marostica, so you will have all the time to enjoy a nice walk around the sunny squares and small lanes of this delightful Italian city, the liveliest in the province of Vicenza. You cannot miss the Grappa Museum and the historical Nardini distillery, close to the old wooden bridge built by Palladio.
If you love art, you should visit the Civic Museum of Bassano, hosting the most important collection of paintings by Jacopo da Ponte, and Palazzo Sturm, with the exhibition on the Remondini family, the famous 18th century printers from Bassano.

Day 3:

WALLED TOWNS OR BRENTA RIVER CYCLEPATH

After checking out of the hotel, you can spend the entire day discovering some wonderful medieval towns, framed by mighty walls and protected by panoramic fortresses: Asolo, Cittadella and Castelfranco Veneto. Otherwise, you can do part of the 80 km Brenta River Cyclepath, connecting Bassano del Grappa with Lake Caldonazzo, in Trentino.

WHAT SOME OF OUR GUESTS SAID
“For three days we used only bikes, had breakfast in the open air amongst the scent of jasmine flowers and we fell asleep looking at the old castle through the skylight: what more could we want for our first holiday in Italy?”
Samantha & John –New York
" I will never be able thank my friends enough for this wonderful present. Maybe they wanted to put me to the test for my 40th birthday, but the itinerary was really easy, even for someone as lazy as me. In fact I’ll do it again at 60….”
Francesca - Rome
“The bike ride was nice, but the real discovery of the weekend was Marostica: a real jewel that luckily few people know about. Thank you for the warm welcome, the excellent food and for organising the wine-tasting in the winery. Super!”
